On Christmas day 1914 the opposing armies on the Western Front spontaniously left their trenches to celebrate by exchanging greetings and gifts. One soldier was the artist Bruce Bairnsfather who later helped lift moral by creating the cartoon infantryman ‘Old Bill’.
Bairnsfather narrowly avoided a Courts Marshall over the event and survived the conflict. Capt. Edmund Blackadder summed it up as “Both sides advanced more during one Christmas Day piss up than they managed in the next two and a half years of war”
